Valentine's Day: Just for lovers? >:P

Picture
February is a month that seems internationally known as the month of hearts. It is the time of year when chocolates get sold out and flowers are twice as expensive. Try asking someone you know about what February means to them and they will surely utter the words Love, Dates, Chocolates, Stuffed Toys, Roses and candlelight dinners. People seem to be searching for something when it comes to this time of year. Especially when it is almost the 14th.

Valentine's Day.

Not having a date on that specific day might be a nightmare for some. I even receive a lot of Group Messages containing expressions like SMV (Samahang Malalamig ang Valentines) or even scouting for possible dates via text messaging. People seem to be searching for love especially on this special month. This is where it begins, the misconception of what February 14th truly is about.

This day is in celebration of LOVE in general. This not only applies to couples, this applies to everything and everyone. Stop thinking that you belong to the lonely heart's club when in reality you are actually blessed with people who care for you. Sometimes, we just fail to realize that what we are searching for is right in front of us, we just didn't notice them.  Last February 14th I spent time with my family and friends. If we start appreciating what we have, we will feel more content and happy with our lives.

So Valentine's Day really is not just for lovers, it is in celebration of Love itself. As long as we have the people we love around us let it be our family or our friends, everyday can be Valentine's Day.

STRESSED?

Living our everyday lives are not easy at all. Deadlines, home works, projects and not to mention exams. We find it hard to make full use of our time which results to disappointments and outbursts of anger. I guess it is safe to say that all of us experience STRESS almost everyday. But before you trouble yourself and overwork your brain in trying to make everything perfect, let me tell you a few facts about STRESS.

The Silent Killer
  • Studies show that stress actually leads to heart disease, high blood pressure, chest pain, and and irregular heartbeat.
  • Stress can make acne worse. Researchers say stress-related inflammation rather than a rise is sebum (the oily substance in skin) is to blame.
  • Stress is linked to the six leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer, lung ailments, accidents, liver cirrhosis, and suicide.(Well these are just three of many effects stress can bring. If you want to read the whole thing, here it is: http://facts.randomhistory.com/stress-facts.html
Even as early as now we must try our best to avoid being too stressed out about something. Stress not only deteriorates our health, it also affects our relationship with people around us. If we feel pressured, we fail to appreciate everything we should be thankful for.  If you feel stressed, make it a habit to pray. We cannot control everything that takes place in our lives and that is exactly why we need to ask for guidance. Although there may be people who do not believe in the power of prayer and some call answered prayers "coincidences".  But as one man stated, "It is amazing how many coincidences happen when one begins to pray."

Prayer and Optimism
Most people might disagree but stress reflects a person's outlook in life. If you are always easily stressed and angry it means you might be pessimistic. If we try to alter the way we think, we will be able to experience less stressed out than we used to be. Never underestimate the power of optimism. Try to see things through different lenses and laugh instead of frowning. Did you know that Laughing lowers stress hormones (like cortisol, epinephrine, and adrenaline) and strengthens the immune system by releasing health-enhancing hormones? An optimistic approach will always bear good fruits.

We have to remember that we are all fireproof when it comes to problems.  But  Fireproof doesn't mean that fire will never come. It means that when fire comes you will be able to withstand it (Fireproof, movie). We have the power to change the way we think and as a result achieve happiness despite all the problems we face each and everyday. It is not about whether or not problems should exist,  problems and trials will continue to happen. But whether we look at it as a burden or a blessing, a discouragement or a challenge, we can actually make the choice to be HAPPY.
